PageRank by the Rules
In these days when the PageRank fever has not died down yet, many website builders and owners are rushing to have their site achieve a high PageRank rating. The Catholic webauthor is not exempt from this fever as he is immersed in the cultural environment of the Internet. As one who must use the Internet ethically in the proclamation of the Gospel, the means he must use must also be within the ethical standards set by the established leading search engines. To do this, he must be schooled in an ethical search engine optimization (SEO) training which he can get also from the Internet. The best teachers of ethical SEO techniques can be found in the Yahoo! Groups at groups.yahoo.com/group/seo_techniques. Membership in this list is restricted because joining the list means you must be really serious in your desire to build a website excellently honed from solidly based ethical SEO techniques. If you do decide to join the list, and follow the teachers to the best of your ability, you will be amazed at the results that you will achieve.

Why is PageRank important for the Catholic webauthor?
Though aiming for a good PageRank may give the impression that the Catholic webauthor is aiming for success, status and prestige for his website, this should not be the focus and context of his mission in the Internet. Rather, PageRank, which is good in itself, must be a means to give importance to the Catholic material and content in his website. It also acts as a very good incentive for him to increase the quality of his website in order that the readers and visitors may encounter a Catholicism that exudes a spirit of excellence and integrity. Though this is the main objective in attaining a good PageRank, the Catholic webauthor must resist the temptation of self-aggrandizement and avoid the pitfalls of a competition stemming from self-centered ambitions and inordinate desires for even higher ratings once he has already achieved a good PageRank. For the Catholic webauthor, PageRank must be a companion-tool for the success of the Catholic Internet Mission and not a deterrent or stumbling block to his spiritual growth. As the Scripture's wisdom always tells us, "what profit would a man have if he gains the whole world but lose his soul."

What to avoid in achieving a good PageRank?
Though there are many ways proffered by a lot of people in the Internet as to how to get a high PageRank rating, in general, they all fall under the category of the "quick results" methods. Some of them may indeed give you what they promise but it usually is done unethically. And sooner or later, you may get penalized by Google if they discover your participation in such "quick results" schemes. Achieving a good PageRank is usually through hands-on hard work with the coding of your webpages. This is where the Catholic webauthor must not only know his theology or spirituality, but also his search engine optimization techniques knowledge. If philosophy was the handmaid of theology in the Church's tradition of learning, today, that handmaid to theology is SEO if you will respond to the call to evangelize in the Internet.

Google information on PageRank
There are many writers who will tell you what PageRank involves and what are the ways to achieve a good rating. Some of them are credible while some are not based on what it really is as calculated by Google's algorithms. To really understand what PageRank involves, you can check it at About Google and go to WebMaster Info. Then scroll down to the section that says PageRank Information. There are questions there which guide you to know more information about PageRank. Google will explain well what PageRank is and will say that it is only one of the over 100 factors that will help your website get a top ten ranking in the first page of results in Google.

How shall I proceed in getting a better PageRank?
First, read all that Google says about it. Second, get to know SEO techniques in order to improve the coding in your webpages. And lastly, continue finding ways to improve your coding and discovering ethical methods of attaining a good PageRank because although Google does not explain all of its algorithms in the calculation of the PageRank, it is of my opinion that they also continually improve their algorithms so that PageRank will be a high quality trademark of theirs. God bless and have a good day!
